We chant because the holy name is Krishna Himself. The holy name is the Lord's avatara, as revealed in the scriptures. It is not an ordinary sound; it is transcendental spiritual sound.
Krishna is infinite consciousness, and His name carries that infinite spiritual potency. When we chant and hear attentively, the divine sound enters through the ears and reaches the heart. What the soul has been eternally seeking—eternal existence, knowledge, and bliss (sat-cit-ananda)—begins to awaken.
One does not need extensive philosophical knowledge before chanting. Even a person who has never heard of Krishna can begin chanting, and consciousness will gradually change. This is exactly what happened through Srila Prabhupada's preaching in the West. People who knew nothing about Krishna became purified simply through chanting.
As consciousness becomes purified, lower tastes naturally diminish. Activities such as intoxication, meat-eating, illicit sex, and gambling lose their attraction because a higher spiritual taste develops.
The holy name satisfies the soul's deepest longing for perfect existence, knowledge, and bliss.
