This statement needs to be understood carefully.
Relationships based on the false identification that "I am this material body" or "I am this mind" are illusory because they rest upon a mistaken understanding of the self.
This does not mean that the material body itself is unreal. Matter exists. The illusion lies in identifying the eternal soul with the temporary material body.
When relationships are founded upon this bodily misconception, they are also illusory because they are based on an incorrect conception of identity.
However, when a person realizes their true identity as an eternal spiritual soul—a part and parcel of Krishna—and engages in loving devotional service, that person's relationships become genuine.
Relationships founded upon one's eternal relationship with Krishna are real, even while living in this material world.
Krishna conscious devotees can therefore experience real love because they understand who they truly are.
Every living being is eternally connected with Krishna. When we revive our forgotten relationship with Him through devotional service, our relationships with all other living beings naturally become spiritual because everyone is connected through Krishna.
This principle exists eternally in the spiritual world, and it can also be experienced in this world by those who become Krishna conscious.
As Krishna explains in the Bhagavad-gita, He is the seed-giving father of all living beings. Therefore, everyone is spiritually related as members of one family under the Supreme Father.
