This subject is explained very clearly in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, particularly through the history of King Yayati.
King Yayati possessed immense wealth, power, and every facility for material enjoyment. He repeatedly pursued sensual pleasures, especially sexual enjoyment, hoping that greater indulgence would bring lasting happiness.
However, despite unlimited opportunities for enjoyment, he never found the satisfaction he was seeking.
Eventually, he became completely disgusted with material enjoyment because he realized that it could never fulfill the deepest longing of the soul.
His realization applies to every conditioned soul.
The Bhagavatam advises us to learn from his example instead of repeating the same mistakes ourselves.
King Yayati concluded that in his pursuit of material happiness, especially sexual pleasure, he had been made into a servant of material energy. Having finally come to his senses, he resolved to give up such pursuits.
Krishna consciousness enables us to arrive at this understanding without having to undergo countless lifetimes of frustrating attempts at material enjoyment.
Through devotional service we realize that material pleasure, particularly sex enjoyment, can never satisfy the soul.
Rather than bringing lasting happiness, unrestricted sense gratification ultimately leads to frustration, attachment, and suffering.
Prahlada Maharaja also explains that those who dedicate human life solely to sensual enjoyment fail to utilize this rare opportunity for spiritual realization.
Instead of seeking spiritual happiness, they waste their valuable human life pursuing pleasures that are common even to animals.
As a result, they become increasingly entangled in material existence and experience many complications, anxieties, and miseries.
By studying the scriptures and sincerely practicing Krishna consciousness, one gradually develops a higher spiritual taste and naturally loses attraction to temporary material pleasures.
