Rationality certainly has an important place in spiritual life. The issue is not with rationality itself, but with becoming overly rational.
Take bhakti as an example. Bhakti is not irrational. It is fully supported by knowledge and reason. However, its essence is not merely rational analysis—it is the experience of Krishna's mercy.
We use our intelligence to understand, appreciate, and glorify that mercy. Rationality helps us understand philosophy, but if we rely exclusively on intellectual analysis without recognizing the role of divine mercy, our thinking gradually turns into speculation.
For example, you may receive a spiritual truth that you do not fully understand philosophically. If you keep analyzing it endlessly through speculation, trying to understand everything immediately, you become overly rational.
Instead, continue serving sincerely. As your devotional service matures, the proper understanding will naturally arise at the appropriate time.
We can certainly use our intelligence to understand how to control the senses, how devotional principles work, and many other philosophical topics. However, the impersonalists also engage in endless rational analysis—constantly speculating about the self, the Absolute Truth, and various philosophical concepts.
A devotee follows a different process.
When the proper time comes, realization naturally manifests through devotional service. One gradually rises above bodily consciousness not merely through intellectual speculation, but through sincere practice.
Bhakti is always founded upon knowledge. It is never based on ignorance. True knowledge forms the foundation of devotional service.
Therefore, use your intelligence sincerely, but do not overextend it.
If complete understanding has not yet come, continue serving. In due course, Krishna will reveal the necessary realization.
So, where should most of your effort go?
Put your greatest effort into serving Krishna and appreciating Srila Prabhupada's mercy. Through that service, deeper understanding will naturally develop.
