Answer
Last time I discussed two important principles.
The first is what Srila Prabhupada explains in this purport: the spiritual master understands the nature of each disciple, knows what service is most suitable for that individual in Krishna consciousness, and gives instructions accordingly.
However, if we examine Srila Prabhupada's own preaching mission, we find that this did not generally occur through direct personal instruction to every disciple. Just as today, Srila Prabhupada was not personally telling each devotee, "This is your nature," or "This is the service you should perform."
Yet Srila Prabhupada clearly writes that this process is taking place. How is that possible?
The answer is that he established an institution—a structured system of association among devotees, management, service, and spiritual advancement.
During his physical presence he repeatedly demonstrated this principle. He wrote many letters instructing devotees in practical matters, but he also frequently told them:
"Why are you writing to me?"
"You should ask your GBC."
Sometimes he even said, "Don't ask such unnecessary questions."
In this way he clearly established the principle that devotees should function through the system he had created.
Srila Prabhupada is a pure devotee and an empowered representative of the Lord. If he established such a system, then when it is properly followed it is fully capable of performing the function he intended.
Otherwise, how could Lord Caitanya's mercy spread to millions of people?
It is already extremely rare to find a pure devotee as one's spiritual master. We have also seen what happened when various people attempted to replace Srila Prabhupada within the disciplic succession.
Therefore, it should be understood that Srila Prabhupada remains the spiritual master for millions of conditioned souls.
How can he perform that function?
Because he is doing it even now.
This requires faith.
Just as Srila Prabhupada said about his own spiritual master, "He is always with me," we should similarly understand that Srila Prabhupada is always with every disciple.
He continually guides, assists and engages sincere devotees in devotional service.
That is the position of an acharya.
Just as Krishna is all-pervading, Srila Prabhupada, by Krishna's arrangement, is spiritually present everywhere for the purpose of serving his disciples.
Therefore, one should have faith that these spiritual principles are genuinely operating within the devotee community. That is why devotees continue making spiritual progress.
Instead of expecting Srila Prabhupada to directly tell each devotee what service to perform, that guidance comes through the authorized system he established.
When the authority system is functioning properly, it acts as Srila Prabhupada's representative.
There is simultaneously oneness and difference.
Direct personal instruction from Srila Prabhupada is certainly unique and especially fortunate. At the same time, the institutional process is intended to deliver the same guidance.
Problems arise only when the system is abused.
Therefore, one should place faith primarily in the process.
As long as someone is functioning within the authorized system, one should faithfully execute the instructions received instead of constantly judging the spiritual advancement or personal purity of the individual giving them.
Material calculations should not become the basis of spiritual decisions.
For example, suppose an authority instructs a devotee to travel by Air India. Later the devotee discovers that another airline would have been ₹100 cheaper.
He should not begin thinking:
"My authority made a mistake. Krishna lost ₹100."
This kind of material calculation is not the spirit of devotional service.
Material perfection continually changes.
If we compare how a temple functioned ten years ago with how it functions today, we will notice many improvements.
Ten years from now there will undoubtedly be even more improvements.
Therefore, devotees should not become absorbed in judging every decision according to material perfection.
Rather, they should sincerely serve the Lord with the best understanding they presently have.
Srila Prabhupada also explains in the Bhagavad-gita that although Krishna personally instructed Arjuna, devotees today receive the same benefit by faithfully executing the service assigned to them according to Krishna's instructions.
This is a mystical spiritual process.
It cannot be understood merely through physical considerations.
Srila Prabhupada's Deity form exists so devotees can worship him by offering clothes, flowers and arati, but that does not mean he is limited to the Deity.
He is spiritually present everywhere for his disciples.
His guidance comes through many channels:
the institution,
Paramatma,
his books,
godbrothers,
senior devotees,
junior devotees,
and sometimes even through people outside devotional life.
Krishna can answer a devotee's sincere questions through any medium.
The principle of guru is continuously active for anyone sincerely seeking the Absolute Truth.
No sincere disciple is ever neglected.
One should never think, "I have been forgotten."
The spiritual master continuously protects and guides devotees through many different arrangements so they can advance in spiritual life.
Therefore, devotees should develop confidence that this transcendental process is genuinely working.
Finally, one should avoid analysis paralysis.
Suppose you enter a large electronics showroom to purchase a mobile phone. Hundreds of models are available.
The more choices you have, the more difficult it becomes to decide.
Similarly, if a devotee constantly wonders:
"What should I do now?"
"What should I do tomorrow?"
"Someone must tell me every tiny detail."
then his free will becomes frozen.
If Krishna personally instructed us every moment—"Raise your right hand," "Raise your left hand"—life would become impossible.
That is not how surrender works.
Krishna has given us intelligence, guidance, and a spiritual process.
Our duty is to sincerely follow that process rather than becoming trapped in endless analysis.
