Answer
Yes, it is possible.
We have two levels of the mind: the conscious mind and the subconscious (or unconscious) mind. Removing unwanted impressions from the subconscious is similar to a process of deprogramming. However, unlike a computer, the mind is not programmed digitally—it is programmed through thinking, feeling, and willing, along with deep emotional impressions.
Whenever a particular situation arises, the subconscious mind immediately produces specific thoughts, feelings, and impulses. These arise automatically in our conscious awareness. Even if our conscious mind recognizes that a particular response is incorrect, the subconscious conditioning continues to push us toward those thoughts, emotions, and actions. These impulses influence the mind and senses to act in conditioned ways.
The process of purifying these subconscious perceptions is submissive hearing.
Many of the misconceptions that once existed in your subconscious have already been purified. That is why you have become a devotee today. At the same time, many more conditioned impressions still remain, and these must also be purified for one to eventually become a pure devotee.
There is no need for any new technique. The process has already been given by Srila Prabhupada. The important thing is to sincerely follow it while understanding its purpose.
For example:
What is the value of hearing every day?
What is the value of reading Srila Prabhupada's books for one hour daily?
When you hear and read submissively, the teachings enter the subconscious mind. They gradually transform your value system, changing your likes and dislikes, your emotions, and your priorities.
Take the example of tapasya (austerity). Most people naturally dislike austerity, especially in modern society, where comfort is considered the ideal. But by regularly hearing spiritual knowledge, your understanding changes. You begin to appreciate that tapasya is valuable because it helps free us from bodily identification.
Gradually you begin to think:
"I have to control my senses. Tapasya is the path to becoming spiritually purified."
As your appreciation for austerity grows, your preferences also change.
This is why devotees attend Mangal-arati. If you struggle to wake up for Mangal-arati, remind yourself again and again of the value of tapasya. Train your mind to appreciate it. Your conditioned mind may tell you to continue sleeping, but because you value austerity, you choose to come.
Over time, that very tapasya purifies your heart. Eventually, attending Mangal-arati no longer feels like an austerity. Your conditioning weakens because you begin to experience a higher taste. At that stage, you naturally want to be with the Lord.
If, in the beginning, you simply tell yourself, "I should go to Mangal-arati because I have to be with the Lord," your desire to sleep may still overpower you because your attraction to the Lord has not yet fully developed.
However, by sincerely practicing tapasya, purification takes place. As purification increases, attraction to the Lord naturally awakens. Then your motivation changes. You no longer go because you have to go—you go because you genuinely want to be there.
That is how submissive hearing gradually cleanses the subconscious mind.
