Surrender does not mean that one follows Krishna only when it is easy and avoids it when it becomes difficult. That is not surrender. We need to understand its meaning in a deeper sense rather than superficially.
Surrender means that I do not have the independence to act according to my own whims. I am not free to do whatever I like. Instead, I accept that I must act according to the instructions of Krishna.
These instructions are received through the spiritual master and the acharya, such as Srila Prabhupada. Therefore, surrender means following what is instructed in the line of disciplic succession.
For example, if one is surrendered, one will chant the prescribed rounds of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra every day, regardless of whether the situation is easy or difficult. Chanting is not conditional; it is part of surrender.
Similarly, material duties must also be performed. A person has responsibilities according to their position in family and society. For instance, a family head must maintain and guide dependents, and provide care and direction in Krishna consciousness. These duties must be carried out whether the circumstances are favorable or unfavorable.
Thus, surrender means performing one’s duties consistently in all situations, without being influenced by convenience or difficulty. This is the beginning of Krishna consciousness—being duty-conscious.
Further advancement in surrender means gradually giving up the pursuit of material enjoyment and instead seeking satisfaction in Krishna consciousness itself.
Surrender also includes fulfilling responsibilities toward parents, family members, and dependents. Children also have duties toward parents, such as obedience, respect, and service. Everyone has specific responsibilities, and these should not be neglected.
If duties become difficult, one may seek help, guidance, or support from senior devotees or appropriate sources, but they should not be abandoned.
This is the proper understanding of surrender. When one follows this principle, there is no room for doubt about how to act in Krishna consciousness.
