Answer
In English, the word “soul” is generally used as a translation of the Sanskrit word ātma, which refers to the self. The real self is the “I”—the conscious being within every person. It is neither the external physical body nor the subtle mind.
The true identity of each living being is the spirit soul, the conscious self who experiences life through the body and mind.
In the beginning, it is not easy to understand what is meant by the soul, spirit soul, ātma, or living entity. This subject is subtle and not immediately grasped through ordinary understanding.
However, as one continues the practice of Krishna consciousness—through chanting, hearing, reading scripture, and worship—gradually knowledge is revealed and ignorance is dispelled. Spiritual understanding awakens step by step.
In this way, doubts and questions become clarified through practical realization. One comes to understand, “Who am I in truth?”
Ultimately, one no longer identifies with the gross body or the subtle mind. Instead, one realizes that the real self is the eternal spirit soul, distinct from both body and mind, and a servant of Krishna.
