Answer
Material qualifications should not be considered the determining factor for someone’s eligibility to practice Krishna consciousness or to engage in devotional service. From the spiritual point of view, material qualifications are not the basis for advancement.
However, it should be understood that whatever material qualifications a person possesses can either become a cause of bondage or a means of liberation depending on how they are used. If they are utilized for sense gratification, they become a source of suffering. But the very same qualifications, when engaged in Krishna’s service, become extremely valuable and spiritually beneficial.
Therefore, the point is not to reject material qualifications themselves, but to purify their usage by engaging them in devotional service. Ideally, everything one possesses—intelligence, speech, body, skills, knowledge, and abilities—should be offered in the service of Krishna.
A devotee naturally aspires to use whatever is within his or her capacity in the service of the Lord. In this way, the entire life becomes an offering to Krishna.
The previous acharyas have composed beautiful prayers expressing this mood of complete surrender. In these prayers, the devotee begins by offering the mind, which is always active in speculation, to the Supreme Lord in order to bring it under control.
The devotee then offers everything—mind, body, possessions, and the sense of ownership itself—at the lotus feet of Krishna. Nothing is considered separate from the Lord’s service.
By surrendering in this way through the guidance of the spiritual master, one becomes situated on the spiritual platform and gradually transcends material consciousness.
