Pleasing Krishna does not depend simply on the external type of service one performs. Rather, it depends primarily on the attitude with which that service is rendered.
In most cases, especially for conditioned souls, Krishna is not directly accessible. Therefore, He mercifully agrees to be present in our lives in various forms and ways.
Krishna appears in this world in His original form and also performs many transcendental pastimes. Whenever we hear about these pastimes, remember them, or contemplate them, we immediately come in contact with Krishna in a spiritual way. In this sense, Krishna responds to the sincere remembrance and engagement of the devotee.
The beginning of Krishna consciousness therefore involves learning how to render devotional service not directly on our own imagination, but through proper guidance. This means acting under the direction of His authorized representative, the spiritual master.
In many situations, even the spiritual master may not be physically present or directly accessible. In such cases, guidance is received through his representatives, such as senior devotees, temple authorities, or other experienced Vaishnavas within the line of disciplic succession.
When devotees engage in devotional service under proper guidance from superior Vaishnavas, they are genuinely pleasing the Supreme Lord. In this system, it does not matter whether the service appears externally difficult or simple. What matters is the sincerity and correctness of the attitude.
The very fact that someone is engaged in Krishna’s service indicates that the person is serious about spiritual life and is progressing toward the ultimate goal of returning back to Godhead.
However, it is also possible that after beginning devotional service, a person may become distracted or diverted away from Krishna consciousness due to material influence or unfavorable association.
Therefore, advancement in devotional life depends greatly on cultivating the correct attitude—that of a servant of Krishna. One should always understand, “I am an eternal servant of Krishna, and my duty is to serve Him with love and devotion.”
This servant attitude is not merely theoretical; it is the foundation of spiritual life. By consistently cultivating this consciousness, one develops the proper mood for serving and pleasing Krishna, and in this way gradually attains perfection and returns back to Godhead.
