Answer
Now, regarding the social aspect of conducting oneself in society, a person who understands the ultimate goal of life as described in the authentic Vedic scriptures sees social interactions from a spiritual perspective.
According to the bona fide scriptures and the teachings of the genuine acharyas, the goal of human life is to return back home, back to Godhead. Human life is meant for spiritual realization and self-purification, ultimately culminating in the revival of our eternal relationship with Krishna.
To achieve this goal, one must seriously practice spiritual life. While doing so, one inevitably interacts with many different kinds of people in society. The scriptures therefore provide guidance on how such interactions should be conducted.
One important instruction is that we should avoid intimate association with those who are habitually engaged in sinful activities and have no interest in spiritual advancement. This does not mean that we hate such people, condemn them, or look down upon them. Rather, the purpose is to protect our own consciousness from becoming adversely influenced by their habits, values, and way of life.
Association has a powerful effect on consciousness. Therefore, the scriptures advise us to be careful about the company we keep. By maintaining proper association, we protect our spiritual determination, our devotional practices, and our spiritual standards.
At the same time, avoiding intimate association does not mean abandoning compassion. In fact, when we sincerely practice devotional service and maintain our own spiritual standards, we become better qualified to help others.
Many people in this world are acting in ignorance. They may not understand the consequences of their actions, nor may they realize that certain activities are degrading their consciousness. Such people are actually in need of spiritual guidance and compassion.
However, to effectively help them, we must first be spiritually strong ourselves. If our own practice becomes weak, our ability to benefit others also becomes weakened.
Therefore, the scriptures teach a balanced approach: protect your own spiritual life through proper association and sincere practice, while simultaneously developing compassion and a desire to help those who are spiritually unaware.
By maintaining strong devotional principles and preserving the purity of our own consciousness, we become genuinely capable of assisting others on the path of spiritual advancement.
