Answer
The question is: Why do people generally prefer kirtan rather than japa? Do they not have the same potency? Is there some material element involved, such as sense pleasure?
First of all, everything we do in Krishna consciousness is spiritually potent. Whether it is chanting the holy name, studying Bhagavad-gita, honoring prasadam, worshiping the Deity, or offering prayers to the Lord, all these activities are equally spiritual and equally powerful. They are all connected to Krishna and are therefore non-different from Him in their spiritual potency.
However, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu placed special emphasis on chanting and hearing the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. He taught two primary ways of chanting the holy name: kirtana and japa. Both were stressed by Lord Chaitanya, and both are important limbs of devotional service.
It is not correct to think that one is inherently superior while the other is inferior, or that one is more spiritual and the other less spiritual. Nor should we conclude that one is more interesting and the other less effective. Pure devotional activities are all fully potent when performed properly.
The important point is that we should follow the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master. The spiritual master instructs us on how to balance and perform the various practices of devotional service. He may direct us to chant a certain number of rounds daily, participate in kirtana, study scripture, worship the Deity, or engage in other devotional activities according to our level and circumstances.
Therefore, spiritual guidance is essential. Without proper guidance, a person's personal preferences do not carry much significance, especially if one is inexperienced in devotional service. A beginner may naturally prefer one activity over another, but spiritual advancement is not based merely on personal likes and dislikes.
At the same time, there is nothing wrong with enjoying or preferring kirtana. No one is discouraged from participating in kirtana. Kirtana is a powerful and joyful process of devotional service, and attraction to kirtana can be spiritually beneficial.
However, we should understand that devotional service is not meant to be practiced solely according to our preferences. Rather, it is meant to be practiced according to the instructions of guru, sadhu, and shastra. When we sincerely accept and follow such guidance, our spiritual progress becomes steady and accelerated.
By properly engaging in all the recommended practices of Krishna consciousness under authorized guidance, we gradually advance on the path of devotion and can attain perfection in this very lifetime.
