Answer
This is basically happening because you are dwelling too much on the past. You keep feeling sorry about difficult experiences you went through — whether last year, last week, or during childhood.

This is the nature of an uncontrolled mind. When the mind is not positively engaged with determination in proper activity, it naturally wanders. Sometimes it remembers pleasant moments from the past, and sometimes it brings back painful memories. Then self-pity arises: “Why did I have to suffer like this? I am so unfortunate.”

But what is past is past. One should not constantly recollect painful experiences simply to feel sympathy for oneself. That does not help.

What is important is how we use the present time now, regardless of whether the past was good or bad. The present moment is in your hands, and the real question is how best you can utilize this valuable time before it slips away.

Constantly dwelling on the past is often a waste of time. Instead, positively engage yourself:

chant Hare Krishna sincerely,
read Srila Prabhupada’s books attentively,
perform your responsibilities properly,
and engage in devotional service with determination.

That is the best use of time.

Srila Prabhupada repeatedly emphasized that every moment of human life is extremely valuable because time lost is lost forever. Even if one were willing to spend millions of gold coins, lost time cannot be brought back.

Human life is especially precious because it gives us the opportunity to practice Krishna consciousness, perform devotional service, and make a permanent solution to all material problems by returning back home, back to Godhead, for eternal life full of knowledge and bliss.
